Guardian journalist Ed Aarons reports that Leicester City are keen to raid Newcastle and sign Martin Dubravka during the January transfer window – after Newcastle recalled Dubravka to the club from his loan at Manchester United.
Dubravka, 33, joined Manchester United on a loan-to-buy deal in the summer. But despite United being in the Europa League, the 30-time Slovakia international failed to make a single outing for United – other than in the Carabao Cup.
For that reason, he has rejoined Newcastle. When he returns, he will find a new face between the sticks in Loris Karius, who has joined the club since Dubravka’s exit as cover for Nick Pope. Karl Darlow is also still on the Newcastle books.
So, four goalkeepers with plenty of Premier League experience between them. You would expect one, maybe even two might leave the club come the end of the month. Leicester are hopeful they can strike a deal to sign the Toon stopper.
Leicester keen to raid Newcastle and sign Dubravka after recall this month
The right decision, for Newcastle to cancel Dubravka’s loan at United. While David De Gea is the obvious first choice, it would have been expected that he would have been playing in Europe. Now, he has a decision to make this month.
Does he stay at Newcastle – where he has a contract until June 2025 – or does he join a club where he is first choice? At Leicester, you would argue he would be. A player that Allan Saint-Maximin has described in the past as “amazing”.
Or would Dubravka prefer to remain, easily become the Toon’s second choice and come in for Pope when needed? The feel-good factor is at Newcastle, a club he has played for since joining on loan in January 2018. He may want to stay.
