The Spaniard has been linked with a reunion at Ibrox with Rangers manager Mark Warburton.

Rangers are said to be interested in the signature of Brentford owned midfield playmaker Jota. The Scottish Sun reported that Gers boss Mark Warburton had been in contact with Brentford about bringing the player to Ibrox in January.

It would be an excellent move for Rangers, considering how popular a player Jota was at Griffin Park when Warburton was Bees head coach. Rangers are also in need of a playmaker after the injury to summer signing Niko Kranjcar.

But he is currently on loan at Eibar, and his exit statement from when he left Brentford may offer some clues as to his future plans – with Rangers looking an unlikely destination a year ago.

When he left Brentford he wrote an open letter to the club’s fans, as reported by Sky Sports, in which he stated:

“This isn’t ‘goodbye’ but more of a ‘see you later’ or ‘hasta luego’ as we say in Spain because I have just extended my contract for an extra year.

“My decision is based solely on personal circumstances and for that reason I will spend the next 18 months at home in Spain. During my time in England I have had offers from the Premier League as well as other foreign leagues but I have always rejected these due to my commitment to Brentford and I would like people to know if it wasn’t for my personal circumstances I wouldn’t be going anywhere.”

Jota left Brentford for personal reasons to return to Spain with the certain aim of returning to the club when whatever his reason was for the move to Eibar became resolved. He even signed a new deal at the club.

He did this after Warburton had left Brentford, so his word would seem to suggest a return to Brentford is his main aim when he ends this loan deal.

Rangers would therefore appear to have a difficult task on their hand convincing him to come to Ibrox.

He is either in Spain for personal reasons, or returning to Brentford, if his leaving letter still has credence.

Glasgow still seems a long shot.
