Joshua Onomah has told the London Evening Standard that he feels his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur to Aston Villa has helped him improve when he heads on international duty.
Onomah played for the England Under-21’s against Scotland on Friday night, and opened the scoring in a 3-1 victory with a stunning long-range strike, sending a dipping volley into the net from outside the box.
Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke scored either side of Chris Cadden’s consolation to give England a comfortable win at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, but Onomah’s goal stole the headlines.
The midfielder, 20, found first-team football hard to come by with Spurs last season, making just five Premier League appearances as manager Mauricio Pochettino kept him at White Hart Lane rather than loaning him out.
However, Spurs did allow Onomah to go out and play elsewhere this term, sending him on a season-long loan to Championship side Aston Villa – and so far, the signs look good.
Onomah has hit two goals in 10 Championship appearances for Villa, and his latest goal will give Pochettino real belief that Onomah will return to Tottenham an improved player at the end of the season.
Onomah has told the London Evening Standard that he feels his loan move has made a huge impact on his development, and he feels this England Under-21 side can go a long way.
“Going to Villa is making a huge impact on my performance when I’m with my country,” said Onomah. “We can go further (than past Under-21 teams). There are a huge lot of players who are playing well for their clubs and country. I won the Euros at Under-17s level and the World Cup at Under-20s. With that experience I feel we can push on for the Under-21s in two years.”
“I have been with these boys since Under-16s. I feel like we have grown and learned from each other. We are getting better all the time and the next goal is to win Euros,” he added.
Onomah’s successful loan move is a result of Pochettino changing his approach to loans, having told The Guardian back in March that he would rather keep his young players in the Spurs squad where he can oversee their development – and his change of mind could end up being the making of Onomah this term in a potentially inspired decision.
