Rangers midfielder Josh Windass’s gesture to the club’s fans who had travelled to the Firhill Stadium on Tuesday evening has been well documented, and it is clear that the 24-year-old has some work to do to get the Ibrox supporters back on his side.

Windass played well against Partick Thistle and scored a brilliant goal in the 39th minute, only to then spoil the moment by putting his finger to his lips apparently to shush the Rangers fans.

With the Gers taking on Ayr United away from home at Somerset Park in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Sunday afternoon, it would be an easy decision for manager Graeme Murty to leave the midfielder out of the starting lineup in the wake of the controversy.

However, Murty should resist the temptation and include the former Accrington Stanley midfielder in the starting lineup and test his character.

Windass will have know what his controversial gesture against Rangers was going to have an effect, and it is important for the player to continue to play and face the fans who will travel to Ayr this weekend.

For Windass to prove his detractors wrong among the Rangers faithful, he needs to be consistent and perform well in and week out.

A goal or two and a good performance against Ayr will go a long way in helping the midfielder get back into the good books of the Rangers fans.
