Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers boss Mark Warburton has a famous footballing name in his ranks.
Quoted by The Sunday Post, Josh Windass has revealed that he has not asked Rangers about the prospect of getting ‘J Windass’ on the back of his shirt next season as a way to distance himself from his famous father.
The 22-year-old left Accrington Stanley to join Mark Warburton’s Rangers revolution in Glasgow this summer as the Gers gear up for their Scottish Premiership return.
But there is already a sense of pressure mounting on the shoulders of young Windass, whose father Dean established himself as a recognisable figure throughout a 22-year spell in English football – including a stint in the Premier League.
And Windass is determined to play his way out of his famous father’s shadow; so much so that he reveals that he asked Accrington to include a subtle ‘J’ on his shirt as a subtle reminder that he is his own man with his own ambitions.
“I have not asked about getting J. Windass on my shirt at Rangers yet, but I did want it at Accrington,” he said via The Sunday Post.
“They told me the FA wouldn’t allow it, which I don’t understand. I just didn’t want people to perceive me as my dad’s son, if that makes sense.
“People think it is easy but it is actually harder. People compare you. He played in the Premier League for a while, and people compare you when you are not doing as well.
“I play in a different position, so don’t score as many goals as him.”
Windass, who signed for Rangers in January, made the switch to Glasgow this summer with former Accrington team-mate Matt Crooks. The duo are with Rangers in South Carolina on a pre-season training camp.
