Glasgow Rangers midfielder Josh Windass could reportedly be on the verge of leaving Ibrox this summer.

According to a report from the Daily Express (28/06; page 55), Rangers could be powerless to prevent Josh Windass leaving Ibrox this summer with Cardiff planning to trigger the Gers star’s £3 million release clause.

Windass has never quite been able to unite the Rangers fanbase during his time with the Light Blues, but there is no doubt that when he is at his best, he is a fantastic player and he proved that by scoring 18 goals in all competitions last season.

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Daily Express reports that he has caught the Bluebirds’ eye and Neil Warnock is hoping to sign the Rangers star ahead of their Premier League return – and given that his release clause is set to be triggered, it appears that the Gers hierarchy can only do so much to prevent Windass from leaving.

But Windass could snub a move, and if the 24-year-old does ultimately stay put, it would arguably be one of the biggest statements that Rangers could possibly make this summer.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With Windass seemingly not one of the most popular members of the squad amongst the fans and with a move to England’s top flight on offer, the playmaker would perhaps not struggle to find a reason to move on.

But that is why if he ultimately decides to stay at Rangers, it would be a massive boost for Steven Gerrard and send a clear message out to the rest of the Scottish Premiership and potential transfer targets.

He does not need to stay if he does not wish to, so deciding to stick at Ibrox would suggest that he sees serious potential in the project that is being undertaken right now.

It may not be a universally popular decision amongst the supporters if he snubbed Cardiff, but all the fans would have to acknowledge that it would be a real statement regarding the club’s direction if he did stay.
