Mark Warburton’s Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers lost to Celtic….again.
Josh Windass has admitted to Rangers’ Twitter page that it is “quite difficult” to compete with Celtic, given the disparity in both club’s transfer budget.
The Gers were dumped out of the Scottish League Cup at the semi-final stage by their bitter Old Firm enemies at Hampden Park on Sunday after losing 1-0.
The scoreline suggests that Rangers have improved a little, having lost 5-1 to Brendan Rodgers’s side six weeks ago, but the reality is that it would have been another embarrassing defeat if not for goalkeeper Matt Gilks.
Overall, it was a sobering reminder that a gulf in quality separate both Glasgow rivals, and it would seem as if manager Mark Warburton – who signed 12 players in the summer – needs further reinforcements in order to compete with the Hoops.
But speaking to the club’s official Twitter page during a press conference, Windass has reminded the masses that Rangers – who had spent the last four years slugging it out in the lower divisions following their financial collapse in 2012 – are operating on a completely different budget than their neighbours.
Celtic netted a £30 million windfall (according to Sky Sports) by qualifying for the Champions League group stages this season, whereas Rangers predominantly relied on the recruitment of free transfers during the summer.
Warburton’s side are seven points behind the Hoops – who have a game in hand – in the Scottish Premiership.
