Winger Josh Sims already has four goals and two assists in just four matches at that level this season, and the only time he did not record either saw Southampton crash to a 3-0 defeat against their young Sunderland counterparts.
After scoring one and setting up two in a 4-1 victory against Liverpool, Sims netted in a 2-0 win against Manchester United before scoring a brace in a 3-1 triumph over Reading on Monday.
It is a huge upturn in form for the England under-18 international and it suggests that he is about to take the under-23 league by storm before challenging for a place in Southampton’s first-team squad.
There is a long way to go, but for a winger to be so effective in four successive matches suggests he has reached a new level; one that could see Southampton manager Claude Puel sit up and take notice in the coming weeks.
