While Aston Villa have recruited a couple of big-name players this summer, none will improve the dynamic of the side quite like Tottenham’s Josh Onomah.
After seeing their array of expensive Championship talent fail to mount a promotion push last season, Aston Villa have worked this summer to add experience to their squad.
However, perhaps their most exciting signing of the window – for those looking beyond John Terry’s bravado – came on Friday when Tottenham Hotspur prospect Josh Onomah arrived on loan.
Terry, Chris Samba and Ahmed Elmohamady are veterans with a proven record at the top level, but they have been brought in to boost a defence that was already handy enough last term.
Villa’s problems, instead, were in attack, where Jonathan Kodjia was given little help – from either the midfielders supposed to be forming a supply line or his fellow forwards in the goal stakes.
Onomah, an agile player with a good passing range, should certainly fix the first issue; Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane will be expected to step up, too, but the Spurs youngster has the talent to contribute in a big way.
The versatile midfielder was central to England’s success at the U20 World Cup and is on the fringes of a very impressive Tottenham side.
Terry might boast a bigger name, but Onomah – particularly for what Villa need right now – is arguably the greater coup.
