As reported by the Telegraph earlier this year, Tottenham Hotspur were planning a summer raid on Bournemouth for Josh King, and while that move failed to materialise, the 25-year-old impressed against his alleged suitors this weekend.

The Norwegian may not have got on the score sheet as Tottenham ran out 1-0 winners, but his work-rate and all-round performance proved that he is more than just a goal-scorer.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham will come back in for a player who scored 15 Premier League goals last season now that they have Fernando Llorente on their books.

Perhaps Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wanted to see if King could replicate last season’s form for Bournemouth this time round – something that has not been possible to date. And yet that does not tell the whole story.

King was Bournemouth’s best player against Tottenham, always a willing runner, a constant threat against one of the best defences in the division and an effective link between the midfield and the attack.

Llorente’s struggle for game time this season is a warning for any other striker thinking of making the move to North London, with Harry Kane the undisputed number one. Yet King’s ability to play behind a front man or out wide means he could still be on Pochettino’s radar.

He will have to up his goal tally this season for that to be the case, but he proved against Tottenham that he is still worth close attention.
