Josh Hart did not say Becky Hammon’s name, but everyone around the Knicks understood where his apology demand was aimed.
New York had just ended one of the longest waits in NBA history, and Hart’s words sharpened the celebration.
Jalen Brunson did not just answer an old debate. He buried it with a championship and a Finals MVP run.

Josh Hart calls for Becky Hammon apology after Knicks championship
A Legion Hoops post shared Hart’s message from the Roommates Show after the Knicks’ title celebrations.
Hart said: “I’m not naming names, but I’m still waiting for somebody to say they was wrong about someone who led our team to a championship in 53 years… I know they have media availability, so we’ll be waiting for that apology.”
The crowd reportedly shouted “Becky,” and the target was clear. Hammon had questioned whether the Knicks could win a championship with Brunson as their best player.
Her original ESPN take was blunt. Hammon said the Knicks were missing a “1A dude,” called Brunson “too small” and added: “If your best player is small, you’re not winning.”
That is why Hart’s line hit with edge. Brunson became the exact kind of small lead guard Hammon argued history rarely rewards.
Jalen Brunson title run flips old Knicks criticism upside down
Hammon is not a random talking head. She is a Hall of Fame player, a former San Antonio Spurs assistant and a championship-winning Las Vegas Aces head coach.
That made her Brunson take carry weight when she said it in 2023. It also made it easier for Knicks players to remember once they proved it wrong.
New York beat the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals, ending a 53-year drought that dated back to 1973. Brunson led the way and won Finals MVP.
In the clinching game, Brunson delivered a 45-point performance as the Knicks won 94-90. Hart played his role too, giving New York rebounding, toughness and connective energy.
The apology request was not really about one TV segment. It was about the entire argument that Brunson could be excellent, but not championship-level excellent.
Hart has his answer now. The Knicks have the trophy, Brunson has the receipts, and Hammon’s old take has aged into a punchline New York fans will not let go.
