Everton’s 2017 summer window will go down as one of their worst in recent times.
Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen were complete flops, whilst splashing so much money on Gylfi Sigurdsson having already signed Wayne Rooney was baffling.
Nikola Vlasic was barely given a chance and Cuco Martina wasn’t exactly memorable.
Even Everton’s young signings didn’t really work out. Henry Onyekuru never played a game for Everton, Lewis Gibson is still waiting for his big break, and Dennis Adeniran has made no impact after a £4million move from Fulham.
Another signing that summer was Josh Bowler, as Everton pulled off a £4.25million deal to sign the winger from Queens Park Rangers.
Bowler was tabbed as a real talent a just 18, and Everton had real hopes that he would go on to become a star at Goodison Park.
Sadly, it hasn’t really happened. Almost four years on from his move, Bowler still hasn’t played a single game for Everton, and has been stuck the Under-23’s this season.
Bowler didn’t exactly shine on loan at Hull City last season, scoring just once in 28 league games, and he now finds himself in a tricky position.
His contract ends this summer, so he may himself as a free agent – and in truth, that may be best for his career given his lack of senior action at 22.
On Monday, Bowler scored for Everton’s Under-23’s against West Ham United, having picked up two assists against Blackburn Rovers a week earlier.
He’s showing the odd reminder of his quality, but having been signed for the future, Bowler’s future may well lie away from Everton after all.
