Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal released Joseph Olowu this summer, but the young defender could reportedly earn a contract at Manchester United.

What’s the story?

The Manchester Evening News are reporting this morning (9:29am) that United have handed a trial to Olowu.

The young defender was released by Arsenal earlier this summer after he failed to break into the Gunners’ first team.

Olowu played for the Arsenal Under-18 and Under-23 teams, but the centre-back’s hopes and aspirations of turning out for the senior side were dashed this summer when the North London club released him.

However, it seems that United rate Olowu highly and are giving him a chance.

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that the Red Devils have taken the 21-year-old on trial.

The young centre-back was actually named in the United Under-23 starting lineup against Kidderminster Harriers on Friday evening.

The Manchester Evening News claim that the youngster played 57 minutes, and United did not concede with him on the pitch.

Proving Arsenal wrong

It will be interesting to see how Olowu fares at United.

If the 21-year-old earns a contract at the Premier League giants, then it will indicate that Arsenal released him prematurely.

After all, United are not going to sign players who they do not think are good.

Olowu is only 21, and he can certainly have a long and successful career in the Premier League.

If the youngster gets a contract at United, then he is likely to be part of the Under-23 side initially.
