Joselu’s Newcastle struggles don’t read much better than Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen’s own troubles in Turkey.

You could hardly blame Newcastle United supporters for getting on Joselu’s back after the striker delivered a masterclass in how not to score in Saturday’s worrying 3-0 home defeat to Watford.
Magpies fans never really expected much of the Spaniard after his £5 million summer move from Stoke City, per Sky Sports. After all, Joselu did not make much of an impact the Potteries and a run of six games without a goal in Newcastle colours, exacerbated by a couple of dreadful finishes against Watford, suggests that history could repeat itself on Tyneside.
Newcastle supporters, then, will be ruing the clubs failure to sign a better striker in the summer transfer window with their season showing signs of collapsing. But they can take some solace in knowing that Vincent Janssen, who turned them down on transfer deadline day, is enduring a barren run even worse than Joselu’s.

According to The Sun (page 58, 10th September), Janssen rejected the chance to move to Newcastle after that nightmare debut season at Tottenham Hotspur in which he followed up his £17 million price-tag with just one Premier League goal from open play.
But after netting two in his first two games since moving to Turkish giants Fenerbahce on loan instead, the struggles have set in once again for the Dutchman. Janssen is now seven games without a goal – even though he has set up two in his last two.

It seems the form that saw Janssen win the Eredivisie Golden Boot award with AZ Alkmaar is still frustratingly out of reach. So while Joselu appears unlikely to hit double figures right now, it doesn’t appear that Janssen would have been a much better addition to a Newcastle side who are crying out for a striker with both confidence and composure in front of goal.
It appears that Joselu is the wrong man. But Janssen does not look like he’d have been the right one.
