Newcastle United’s Joselu says Benitez’s 4-4-2 can work.
Joselu has told The Northern Echo that he and Newcastle United team-mate Dwight Gayle can co-exist in a two-pronged attack.
Newcastle have lost six of their last seven Premier League games, and four of their last five when Rafael Benitez switched things up to a 4-4-2 system.
Fans of the St James’s Park club have been vociferous in their claims that two strikers up front makes for an unbalanced side, even though Gayle, in particular, is benefitting from it after scoring three goals in his last five outings for the Magpies.
Both of them were on target in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Leicester City, in which Ayoze Perez netted a late own goal, and Joselu, a £5 million signing from Stoke, says that the system can work.
“I have played three or four times with him, and I think we play well together,” he said to The Northern Echo.
“The manager takes the decision, and we try to do our best every game. I’m very happy for me and for Dwight as well, but we need the points.”
Benitez’s 4-4-2 might work for Josleu and Gayle, but the fact is that it’s not working for the team and the Spanish manager needs to revert to a system which allows for one central striker.
