The 31-year-old struggled for game-time for the Championship club last season.
Jose Semedo has insisted that he is not planning to simply make up the numbers after agreeing a new contract to stay at Sheffield Wednesday, the Sheffield Star reports.
The midfielder was, perhaps surprisingly, handed a new one-year deal at Hillsborough despite struggling to make much of an impression last season.
The 31-year-old made just 10 appearances in the Championship during the last campaign, and started just one league clash following the turn of the year.
Nevertheless, Semedo has sent a warning to those vying for a place in Carlos Carvalhal’s midfield that he plans to fight for his place in the Owls side next season.
“I’m not here to make up the numbers,” he told the Star. “I want a first-team place. I want to play and not to be on the bench.
“I’m here to do my best.”
Though the Portuguese failed to make much of an impact last season, his presence in the squad does enhance the options that Carvalhal has available to him.
He has the ability to break up play in the middle of the park, which could be crucial in the latter stages of games this coming campaign when Wednesday hold a narrow lead.
And having come so close to clinching a place in the Premier League last term, the manager may feel that it is important to keep as many things the same as possible this time around to ensure that the squad have the foundations in place to mount another promotion bid this year.
