Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have both been linked with moves for the England full-back.
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw speaks with manager Jose Mourinho
The future of Luke Shaw at Manchester United has been a topic for discussion in recent weeks. It appears the left-back has struggled to win over the United boss Jose Mourinho since his return from a serious leg-break.
Teams to have been linked with the player include Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. All three however are rivals of United in the Premier League.
A sale to Liverpool is highly unlikely, that would be blocked at the top level at Old Trafford considering the rivalry between the two sides.
But as for Everton and Tottenham, Mourinho would not seem like one to stand in his way. At least, the example of his current player Juan Mata would suggest so.
Mourinho was the Chelsea boss when Mata was sold to Manchester United in January 2014. Speaking to Sky Sports after the deal, he confirmed he had no qualms selling a player to a rival team:
“A team can only play with 11 players, not 12.
“Arsenal is full of top players, City is full of top players, and United is full of top players, so if Juan plays for them, it means somebody else is not playing.
“So why not? Every club does this in other countries, so what’s the problem to do it here?
Manchester United’s Juan Mata with manager Jose Mourinho after he has been substituted
“If a similar situation happens (and) instead of us, instead of Man United, it’s Arsenal or Manchester City or Tottenham or Liverpool, we would do the same.
“If the offer was the same and Juan desired to go, it would be the same.”
Mourinho, it seems, would have no problem selling Shaw to a rival in the Premier League. As he stated with Mata, a top player is going to join a top club.
If Tottenham and Everton are keen, this should certainly give them hope of concluding a deal for the England international.
