Morais is the new favourite to succeed Paul Heckingbottom at Barnsley.
Jose Mourinho’s former assistant, Jose Morais, is now 1/7 to become Barnsley’s next manager with bookmakers Sky Bet.
That makes Morais, who worked under Mourinho at Porto, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea, the heavy favourite to succeed Paul Heckingbottom at Oakwell.
The 52-year-old is out of work after losing his job as manager of AEK Athens last year, and had a similarly unsuccessful spell at Antalyaspor before then – although he did experience solo success with Esperance and Al-Shabab, of Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
St Mirren’s Jack Ross was the front runner for the Barnsley vacancy, but has dropped to 18/1 after reports emerged that he has rejected the opportunity to join the Championship strugglers.
Another Portuguese coach, Rui Almeida, is second in the betting at 9/2, with Tianjin Quanjian’s Paulo Sousa and Blackpool’s Gary Bowyer 8/1 and 12/1, respectively.
Barnsley are currently 22nd in the standings, following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday – their first game of the post-Heckingbottom era.
