Liverpool are currently sitting top of the Premier League table.

Jose Mourinho thinks Liverpool winger Mo Salah needs to make a ‘bigger effort’ from a defensive standpoint because it would help right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

On Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded three points against Chelsea, with the game finishing 2-1, and Liverpool in the end, doing well to walk away with the points.

There’s no doubt that was a tense end to the game at Stamford Bridge, but Klopp’s side proved their worth in a tough game and maintained their 100% to the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports Football (22/09/2019 at 7:15 pm), Mourinho shared why Salah needs to do more from a defensive standpoint towards the end of the game, in particular.

“I think in the last 10 or 15 minutes, Salah has to make a bigger effort,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “And has to help a little bit more Alexander-Arnold. Then Alexander-Arnold can play a little bit more on the inside. And then Firmino drops back a little.

“When arrives the moment, ‘we are going to win ugly’. At this moment, we don’t have the potential, the freshness to be aggressive to score the third goal. You have to defend better.”

Both Salah and Mane, whilst they are workhorses, don’t need to do much defensive work in Klopp’s system because of how they dominate games, press from the front and how high their full-backs operate.

But even if either of them don’t do that little bit extra in defence, they more than make up for it in the attacking third, time and time again.

Nonetheless, Liverpool are sitting top of the Premier League table following that win against Frank Lampard’s side, with Manchester City five points behind them.
