Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has told Football.London that he told his players to ‘follow the same road’ after losing to Liverpool.
Spurs travelled to Anfield for a top of the table clash, and fell behind as Mohamed Salah’s deflected strike beat Hugo Lloris for the opening goal.
Son Heung-min equalised for Spurs on the break, and Tottenham had chances to go ahead; Steven Bergwijn put one effort wide before then hitting the post, and Harry Kane put a header over the bar.
Spurs were made to pay for it in the end, as Roberto Firmino headed home Andrew Robertson’s corner to give Liverpool all three points.
On another day, Tottenham could have won this game, and Mourinho will still have hope that Spurs can challenge the Reds for the title.
After the game, Mourinho was asked what exactly he told his players at full time, and he suggested that he told them to stay on the same road.
Mourinho believes no result last night would force Spurs away from their current path, and urged his players to move on and focus on Sunday’s game against Leicester City.
“It’s just to follow the same road. It’s not because we win here tonight or we lose here tonight that we are going to leave that road,” said Mourinho. “The road is the match after match, the road is to improve, the road is to prepare the future of this team better and better and better like other clubs do.”
“Like other managers they have to do, so we have a big game again on Sunday against one of the best teams, and we have to move on. And tomorrow we are there, and let’s go for Sunday again,” he added.
