Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has told Football.London that Steven Bergwijn is playing with injuries at the moment.
Mourinho made the comments while explaining why Bergwijn is not scoring goals and is missing chances.
The Dutch winger had two very good chances against Leeds United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Mourinho has said that the 23-year-old winger is struggling to train properly and has outlined his physical problems.
The Portuguese told Football.London: “Yeah, we need him to score goals. Of course we know he has the ability to do that. If you go back one year, his first match and he scored an amazing goal. We know that he has the ability to do that.
“He’s accumulating also physical problems. I don’t know if you could see but even in the last 10 minutes he was touching his groin, he was touching his adductor.
“He’s having problems that are stopping him now and again from training properly and at high intensity so he’s suffering a little bit. But of course he gives very good things to the team. I believe the goals will arrive if his condition improves.”
Important player for Tottenham Hotspur
Bergwijn is a very good winger who has done well for Spurs, and the importance of the Netherlands international for the North London club cannot be undermined.
The youngster has made seven starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made one start and three substitute appearances in the Europa League for Spurs so far this season, according to WhoScored.
Spurs, who won 3-0 against Leeds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, are challenging Liverpool and Manchester United for the Premier League title this season, and Bergwijn will play a big role in that quest.
