Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has told Sky Sports that he thinks Toby Alderweireld was ‘fantastic’ against Manchester City.
Spurs picked up a huge win on Saturday evening, beating City 2-0 at home as Mourinho got the better of Pep Guardiola for the second time in 2020.
Son Heung-min fired Spurs in front from Tanguy Ndombele’s pass, and City thought they had levelled through Aymeric Laporte before the goal was ruled out for a Gabriel Jesus handball.
Mourinho made a crucial change in the second half as Giovani Lo Celso was brought on in midfield, and he responded quickly by scoring inside his first minute on the pitch.
City couldn’t recover, and for the second time this year, Spurs ran out 2-0 winners despite Guardiola’s men having the lion’s share of possession.
There was only one real negative from the night, as defender Alderweireld was substituted in the second half with what appeared to be a groin injury.

Joe Rodon came on in his place, and Mourinho has admitted that he thought Alderweireld was ‘fantastic’ against City, hailing his performance.
Mourinho added that Alderweireld’s injury is ‘important’, suggesting it was a product of major fatigue – and now believes he will be out for some time.
“I just feel sorry for Toby, with a fantastic performance – a fantastic performance,” said Mourinho. “He has an important injury. It’s the injury of the fatigue. I would say so,” he added when asked if it’s a long-term injury.
