The intersection of elite football and Formula 1 often reveals striking parallels in how the world’s most successful sporting organisations operate.

Heading into the 2025 British Grand Prix, Ferrari found itself navigating a period of intense scrutiny.

Despite high expectations for their star-studded driver lineup, the team arrived at Silverstone mired in a performance slump, struggling to find the same form as they had during the previous year’s championship.

Having managed Real Madrid, legendary football manager Jose Mourinho is uniquely qualified to discuss the burden of representing a global sporting icon.

He used his opportunity at Silverstone last season to draw direct parallels between the expectations at the Santiago Bernabeu and the high-stakes environment of Maranello.

Jose Mourinho compared the responsibility of driving for Ferrari to playing football for Real Madrid

During an appearance at the 2025 British Grand Prix, Mourinho was asked for his thoughts on the slump Ferrari was currently in the midst of.

Asked if there was any sort of advice that he could give Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc, the ‘Special One’ said, “Ferrari is the Real Madrid of Formula 1.

“At Real, they say that when you put on the white jersey, you’re already winning 1-0. It’s the same with Ferrari – when you step onto the track, you win. But while wearing red is a dream, it is also a huge responsibility.

“It’s logical that representing such an important brand involves a lot of responsibility and a lot of pressure. How do you deal with the pressure? By winning.

“You have to have the strength to overcome, to believe in yourself, and to try to have the time that the owners and the fans usually don’t give you.

“But as a coach, player, team manager, driver, you have to believe in yourself and in what your teammates are doing.”

Carlos Sainz made a similar comparison to Jose Mourinho’s analogy ahead of his move to Ferrari in 2021

As a Madrid native, Carlos Sainz is an avid fan of Los Blancos and has regularly been spotted in the stands at the Santiago Bernabeu in between his duties on the race track.

Ahead of his move to Maranello from McLaren in 2021, the Spaniard was asked whether the Scuderia are the Formula 1 equivalent of his beloved Real Madrid in an interview with Diario AS.

The four-time Grand Prix winner said, “That’s one way to put it… But McLaren is like Barca, which is also a great team to be a part of.

“You can’t really compare them, because both are undergoing restructuring to try and dethrone Mercedes in the future.

“But they are the two best teams in history, and when you move from one to the other, it means you’re doing something right in Formula 1.”
