Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:14pm, April 16, 2021) what he heard Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti tell Jordan Pickford last night.

Spurs played out a 2-2 draw with Everton away from home at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Friday evening.

It was a very entertaining game, but there were defensive mistakes and the passing, especially from Tottenham, was not great all the time.

Mourinho has given his take on why his Tottenham players could not pass the ball as well as they could, and has shared what he heard Ancelotti say to Pickford, who cost Everton £25 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Sunderland in the summer of 2017, as reported by BBC Sport.

The Portuguese said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:14pm, April 16, 2021), as transcribed by Football.London: “I think it was not an easy game to have the ball due to pressing. Richarlison is the kind of guy who presses a lot the first line.

“They were pushing with Iwobi and Sigurdsson with our three defenders and we were doing the same with Sonny and Kane.

“I don’t think it was very easy. Even Carlo [Ancelotti] was complaining with Pickford about ‘why you don’t play to Holgate’. Probably because Holgate feels the pressure!”

Top-four challenge

The draw at Goodison Park on Friday evening does not do Everton or Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the Premier League top four any good.

Spurs are now five points behind fourth-placed West Ham United, who have a game in hand, while Everton are six points off the Champions League places.

One should not be surprised if neither Tottenham nor Everton finish in the Premier League top four this season.
