Roma boss Jose Mourinho has rejected an approach to become the new Everton manager as the Toffees weigh up a replacement for Rafael Benitez.

On Sunday afternoon, Everton decided to sack Benitez after a dismal 2-1 defeat away at Norwich City.

An ill-fated appointment from the very start, Benitez leaves with anger from fans rising and wins at a premium.

Everton are already being linked with a number of new managers, but they appear to have been snubbed by Jose Mourinho.

The Telegraph claim that Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is the top target for the job, but Everton did also sound out Mourinho.

It’s stated that Mourinho has already rejected the offer though, and will remain loyal to Roma in his first season with the club.

The Mirror noted in December that Everton fancied a move to land Mourinho if they ended up parting ways with Benitez.

It seems Everton did make a cheeky attempt to lure Mourinho to Goodison Park, but that ship already appears to have sailed already.

Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham back in April, ironically after a 2-2 draw away at Everton.

The Portuguese boss immediately headed off to Italy, becoming Roma boss in a shock and sudden move.

Mourinho has endured a mixed season; 11 wins, two draws and nine defeats in Serie A. Currently on course of the Europa Conference League qualifiers, Mourinho likely had bigger ideas in mind.

This just isn’t what Everton need. The Toffees have been down this path before under Farhad Moshiri; a big, glitzy name whose ideas and style of play are largely antiquated.

Carlo Ancelotti and certainly Benitez fit that bill, with Mourinho another who has been found out in the Premier League in recent years.

Moshiri needs to stop this line of thinking and give Everton a real identity. Quite frankly, Everton are better off without Mourinho.
