Tottenham have sadly made a habit of missing out on transfer targets in recent seasons.
Milan Skriniar this summer, Paulo Dybala in 2019 and perhaps most poignantly, they missed out on the chance to sign Bruno Fernandes before he joined Manchester United.
Spurs signing Fernandes could have been an absolute game changer, just look at how he’s turned Manchester United’s fortunes around in the past 12 months, but unfortunately for Tottenham, they missed out and he’s starring elsewhere in the Premier League.
Unfortunately, Tottenham could find themselves in a similar position this summer if they allow Manchester City to pip them to the signing of Danny Ings.
Both clubs have been linked, and Tottenham need to make sure they don’t lose this race as they lost the tussle for Fernandes’ signature.
On the surface, it’s easy to laugh off this comparison. After all, Ings isn’t the headline-making superstar that Fernandes is quickly becoming in England, but let’s not forget, this is a man who scored 21 Premier League goals last season who plays a role that Tottenham desperately need to fill.
Just look at how Spurs struggle when Harry Kane is out of the squad, they won just three of the nine league games he missed last season, and it’s no coincidence that they lost all three of the games that were affected by his recent injury.
Having Ings in the team would negate that over-reliance on Kane as he’s a striker who can score at a similar rate and that’s exactly what Tottenham need right now more than anything.
Is Ings as good as Fernandes? No, of course he isn’t, with all due respect he’s been playing for Southampton for the past few years, but would Spurs regret missing out on him in the same way they must regret not signing Fernandes? There’s a strong case to suggest they would.
Spurs need to make sure City don’t beat them to Ings or Mourinho could soon have another Bruno Fernandes on his hands.
