West Ham United signed the towering centre-back in January.

Hammers new-boy Jose Fonte spoke to Sky Sports for an exclusive interview, and explained the reasoning behind his move to West Ham, despite having plenty of other offers on the table.

The 33-year-old left Southampton acrimoniously in January, after reportedly handing in a transfer request, and subsequently received heavy criticism from Saints fans for his perceived lack of loyalty.

The Portuguese international has left that stage of his life behind him, however, and has made a seamless transition into the Hammers’ backline, giving Slaven Bilic’s side an all-round more solid look about them.

And Fonte sat down for an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, explaining how the club’s passionate fans and the fantastic new stadium played key roles in his move to East London:

“In the summer, there were a few offers, including West Ham. But in January they came back in and it was a no brainer for me because of the size of the club and the move to the Olympic Stadium. The passionate fans they have and also the ambition of the manager and the chairman. It was an easy decision to choose West Ham.”

West Ham take on Premier League leaders Chelsea tonight at the London Stadium, and a win will take them up to ninth in the table – something that will obviously be easier said than done against Antonio Conte’s well-drilled group of players.

But if they do manage a victory, an assault on the top seven will not be completely outside the realms of reality for the Hammers.
