West Ham United central defender Jose Fonte has responded to club co-chairman David Sullivan’s recent comments about him, as quoted by Sky Sports.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, West Ham co-chairman Sullivan said that his kids begged him not to sign Fonte from Premier League rivals Southampton.

The Hammers secured the services of the Portugal international centre-back in January 2017 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £8 million.

When asked for a response, Fonte told Sky Sports: “It’s ignorance. I’m not going to say anything. It’s not going to change who I am. It’s not going to change what I do.

“I’m going to keep being the good professional that I am. I am going to keep working hard to try and help my team-mates and the manager. What has been said has no effect on me or who I am.”

The 33-year-old centre-back added about his future: “That decision is not for me. I am 33 years of age. I have 500 or 600 appearances.

“I know what I have done in football. I know how hard I have to work to be in this position. It makes no difference to me. I will still continue to be the same guy I have always been.”

Fonte is a very good and experienced central defender who is on the sidelines at the moment with an ankle injury.

The former Crystal Palace defender’s performances for the Hammers so far have been mixed, and the London Stadium faithful should be optimistic that he will come good once he recovers full fitness.

West Ham are in danger of getting relegation to the Championship at the end of the season, although the Hammers did win against Chelsea at the London Stadium in the Premier League at the weekend.
