Jose Fonte was linked with Liverpool before he left Southampton for West Ham United.
Jose Fonte joined West Ham United from Southampton in January 2017. According to BBC Sport, the Hammers had to pay the Saints a transfer fee of £8 million in order to secure the services of the Portugal international central defender.
As reported by BBC Sport, Fonte actually made a transfer request at the Saints with 18 months left on his contract. During his time at St. Mary’s Stadium, the 33-year-old established himself as one of the best players for Southampton.
Fonte was linked with a move to Liverpool before he made the switch from Southampton to West Ham in January 2017. As reported by The Mirror, the Reds wanted to sign the Euro 2016 winner, having recruited a number of players from Southampton in recent years, such as attacking midfielder Adam Lallana and winger Sadio Mane.
Fonte has now responded to speculation linking him with a move from Southampton to Liverpool in January 2017, dismissing it as paper talk.
The defender said on The Friday Football Social show on BBC Radio 5 live last Friday evening (8:09pm, November 17, 2017) when asked about the Liverpool speculation: “It’s newspaper stuff, isn’t it? I don’t know. It didn’t happen, but a lot of ex-teammates went there.”
