Jose Fonte explains why Tottenham should be inspiring West Ham

Jose Fonte believes that West Ham United can move up the Premier League table and may want to follow Tottenham Hotspur’s lead.

In comments that may perhaps annoy West Ham fans, Jose Fonte has suggested that following Tottenham’s example may be the best way for Slaven Bilic’s men to move themselves right up the table in the coming years, the Daily Mail reports.

Over the last few years, the Hammers have occasionally flirted with the top four in the Premier League – they were fourth at Christmas 2014 and fifth in January 2016 – but have tended to fall away after bright starts, or start extremely slowly like they have done this season.

However, with one of the best facilities in the country in the London Stadium, the Hammers seem to have the foundations in place to make a sustained charge for the top four in the future, especially considering how Tottenham have elevated themselves in recent years, and of course, how Leicester stunned everyone by clinching the title last year.

And Fonte has suggested that Spurs’ progression in particular, could act as inspiration for the Irons if they want to reach that level.

“You can do it the Manchester City way and spend a lot of money,” he said, as reported by the Mail, when asked about how West Ham could go about ascending up the table.

“Or you can do it like Tottenham, spend a little bit of money, add quality, not astronomical signings but strong signings. Don’t let the most important players leave. They’ve been close. That might be perhaps the best approach. We’ve got to find our way picking the best examples.”

Before Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival at White Hart Lane, Spurs had registered just one top four finish in the Premier League era, but within a couple of years, the club have moved to a level where finishing below fourth would be deemed to be something of a failure, and people are discussing what they need to challenge for the title.

That may seem to be a long way off for the Irons based on what they have done this season, but it may simply take one brilliant transfer window where all their gambles pay off to bring them onto the periphery of the top four discussion.
