Rangers are fighting to keep Ibrox goal-getter Alfredo Morelos in Glasgow this month.

Joe Hart of West Ham United checks that Jose Fonte of West Ham United is okay after going down during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and West Ham United at Selhurst Park...

This week saw West Ham United sell Jose Fonte to Chinese club Dalian Yifang for a fee reported to be in the region of £5 million by the BBC.

That fee certainly courted plenty of attention and reaction. It certainly felt like West Ham had got a good deal for a player who has been out of form and fitness – not to mention his age.

At 34-years-old the Portuguese international is hardly a spring chicken and it just shows how much money Chinese clubs are prepared to throw at the transfer market to get their targets.

Which must worry Rangers fans.

Rangers have been fighting off the attention of Chinese Super League club Beijing Renhe for the past few weeks, as they look to sign their Colombian goal-machine Alfredo Morelos.

Reported bids of £9 million and £11 million have been touted – as reported by the Scottish Sun – which is nothing compared to the £5 million paid for an ageing defender.

Rangers are prepared for another approach for the player, with the Scottish Sun reporting yesterday that Beijing are simply refusing to take no for an answer from Rangers.

Beijing are also believed to carry more financial clout than Dalian, so their persistence in any Morelos pursuit will have fans worried he could make an Ibrox exit.

If Dalian are to pay £5 million for Fonte, who knows how much Beijing may be prepared to go for Rangers’ star striker.

Hopefully not enough to prise him away from Glasgow just yet, as Rangers look to close the gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this weekend.
