The Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool defenders are two of the very best in world football, and the former Southampton man is a big fan of both.

Jose Fonte sat down for an exclusive interview with Squawka, and responded when asked who is the better defender out of Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld and Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.
The Portuguese defender played with both the Spurs man and the Reds ace during their time together at Southampton, and he forged impressive partnerships with the Belgian and the Dutchman.
It could be argued that the Tottenham and Liverpool centre-backs are the two best central defenders in the game at the moment, but who is the best out of the two?
That was the question posed to Fonte when he sat down for an exclusive interview with Squawka:
“Van Dijk and Alderweirled – it’s very difficult to choose. They’re both amazing players and obviously Van Dijk is undoubtedly the best defender in the world. But I had an amazing season with Alderweireld. Alderweireld has great composure and is great on long balls – he had a great year with me but Van Dijk is a force of a nature, he’s super fast, so tall, he wins every ball. Van Dijk is undoubtedly the best defender in the world, but I’ve enjoyed playing with both.”

Van Dijk is arguably better than Alderweireld in the air, but the Tottenham man does have a better array of passing than the Liverpool defender.
At the end of the day, however, they are both truly world class, and it is incredibly hard to split the pair.
And judging by Fonte’s comments, he feels the same way, although he did slightly give it away by suggesting that Van Dijk is the world’s best defender.
