Jose Enrique has responded to Wolves signing Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon as saying that he wishes the Portuguese midfielder was joining Liverpool instead – amid reports that the Reds are long-term admirers of Nunes.
Brazilian-born Nunes, 23, has joined Wolves for a club-record fee worth an initial £38million, plus around £4million in add-ons. It comes after the Portugal ace went past 100 games for Sporting in 21-22, with 101 for the Liga NOS side.
The Guardian reports that Liverpool and Manchester City have shown interest in Nunes. But given he is represented by Jorge Mendes, who has strong connections with Wolves, he has ended up in the Midlands for a club-record deal.
Given the belief that Liverpool could do with a midfielder, and interest in Nunes, Enrique gave his response. Often using social media to talk to Liverpool fans, he said: “I wish it was us, but congratulations to Wolverhampton.”

Liverpool do need a midfielder. Naby Keita is in the final year of his deal and there are conflicting reports over whether he is going to sign new terms. Jordan Henderson and James Milner are a combined 68 years of age, in midfield.
Nunes is a top, top player. He is more of a defensive-minded midfielder, a no.6 that would sit in front of Fabinho. But he is more than adept at scoring the odd goal, or laying on an assist. In 50 games last term, he had a hand in 12 goals.
But it his work rate, his passing and his football intelligence that sets him apart from the rest. He is a real talent. At 23, he is only going to get better. Liverpool could really have done with his arrival at Anfield. Perhaps, one for the future.
