Jurgen Klopp admitted he tried to sign Ajax captain Dusan Tadic when he swapped Southampton for the Dutch champions in 2018 – and Jose Enrique has responded by saying he “wishes” Tadic was playing for his beloved Reds.
Tadic, 33, impressed in glimpses at Southampton. The 90-time Serbia international clocked up 59 goal involvements in 162 Southampton outings but failed to really go up to the next level. He left to join Ajax in 2018, for just £10million.
In the five years he has spent at Ajax, he has been incredible. His numbers are remarkable. In 209 Ajax appearances, he has scored 94 goals and created 98 more in assists. 192 goal involvements in 209 games is quite unbelievable.
Now 33, he is showing no signs of slowing down. Ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Tadic’s Ajax, Klopp said he tried to sign Tadic from Southampton. It would have been another example of a player joining Liverpool from the Saints.
Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and others are examples of such a move. Following Klopp’s comments, ex-Liverpool defender and Reds-supporting pundit Enrique says he wishes Ajax captain Tadic was a Liverpool player.
Enrique wishes Tadic was playing for Liverpool
When Tadic was at Southampton, he was a good player – but hardly on the level required to be a Liverpool player. His move to Ajax has brought the best out of him, producing some of the best numbers in European football right now.
There is no chance Liverpool would look to bring him to Anfield now. He is 33, and by the time his Ajax contract comes to an end, he will be 35 – turning 34 next month. But they could certainly do with him at this moment in time.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and Tadic might have excelled under Klopp. But it is clear to see that when a player finds the right club, they sparkle and Tadic is a prime example. He needed Ajax to get the best out of him.
