Speaking on the ITV Football Show Podcast, Jose Enrique has claimed that Daniel Sturridge would still be a Liverpool player if it wasn’t for his injury problems.

The striker was released by the Reds back in 2019, and since then he’s rarely been seen on a football pitch, and he’s been without a club for almost a year at this point.

However, despite his current struggles, Enrique believes that Sturridge would still be a Liverpool player if he hadn’t struggled with injuries.

“If it wasn’t for his injuries, talent-wise, he’d be one of the most talented players I’ve ever played with. Definitely a top talent. The problem is that you can’t control injuries. That’s the problem.

“I actually talk to him quite a bit still, and he’s still without a club still now. You know, he cancelled his contract there in Turkey and he’s still without a team,” Enrique said.

“It is all because of the injury problems he has, because if you take that away, as a player. Well, he was one of the best strikers in the world actually, it was incredible to play with him, and you’d see in training when he’d go up against two players and what he does with the ball sometimes you ask , how has he done that?

“I believe that the person is the most frustrated by that is definitely Daniel. Because if you take that from him, and I’m sure he’d be a Liverpool player and maybe even still be a Liverpool player now.”

This is certainly an interesting theory, and to be fair Enrique may be right.

It’s a long time ago now, but we mustn’t forget that Sturridge was one of the best strikers in England at one point.

The 2013/14 season saw Sturridge score more than 20 goals in the Premier League, and at that point he looked as though he’d be Liverpool’s number nine for years to come.

With Roberto Firmino misfiring for the Reds, we have to wonder what could have been if Sturridge had just been able to stay fit.
