Everton gave Jose Baxter another chance this summer.
Jose Baxter is continuing to push on with his most unlikely comeback at Everton.
The 25-year-old is in his second spell at the club, with the Toffees taking a chance on him this summer when nobody else would.
Baxter was a free agent after his Sheffield United contract expired a year earlier, and he missed the entire 2016/17 season serving a drugs ban.
The attacking midfielder is playing for Everton’s under-23 side, and starred at the weekend in their win over Manchester City.
Everton’s official website praised Baxter’s ‘fine display’, in which he came close to scoring.
Back in August, Baxter was praised by Everton under-23 coach David Unsworth, who told the Liverpool Echo: “He’s a great lad and I’ve really enjoyed working with him.”
The former England youth international faces a fight to stand a chance of getting into Everton’s first team, but simply being at the Toffees can be a platform for future success elsewhere.
Everton have rescued the career of their former graduate, and while his future may not lie at the club, he is playing well enough to warrant other teams taking a look at him, especially if he can stay clean off the field.
