Jos Luhukay has revealed that Sheffield Wednesday will target Championship and Premier League under-23 team players this summer – but only if positions cannot be filled by the Owls’ own academy players.

Luhukay is set to embark upon his first closed-season as Wednesday manager, in which he will be tasked with turning his underachieving side into promotion contenders once again next term.

Unlike in the previous two campaigns, which were extended by the Owls’ play-off participation, there is certainty about the division in which they Yorkshire side will be playing next term.

But speaking at a press conference, broadcast via Sheffield Wednesday’s official Facebook page on Thursday, the Dutchman claimed he has yet to be informed of his transfer budget – something he quickly brushed off as “not important”.

And when asked whether he will look home or abroad for new recruits – having acquired a strong knowledge of Dutch and German football – Luhukay replied: “First in our own club, and by that I mean our academy.

“I think it is very important to look in the Championship for typical players. They know the league, they know the culture, they know the way that you can play in the Championship

“Also I think we must look to the under-23s of big clubs in the Premier League, where you also have players with high dynamic, with a high spirit but also ones who can maybe develop in the future, first maybe they must take one step back and after maybe they can go a step forwards.

“This is the way, I think: first look in our own academy for our positions, then in the Championship and maybe in the under-23s of the Premier League clubs, for players who maybe haven’t had a chance in the first team but (for whom the Championship can be) a challenge to come further in their own career.”
