The Sheffield Wednesday manager appears to have been misquoted by the media.
The Sheffield Wednesday manager, Jos Luhukay, has insisted he did not join the Owls for the sake of having a job.
Luhukay was purported to have claimed as such in an interview with the Dutch media last week, which was then translated – perhaps without 100 per cent accuracy – by a number of English publications.
But asked by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Andy Giddings if he could clarify those comments, the Dutchman said: “I have tried to explain – the question came about what I did after my time in Germany and I had a long think about where my future will be. I was waiting for a decision to make and when the possibility came to go to England, I was 100 per cent motivated and it was a big challenge in a new country, in a new culture and in a traditional club such as Sheffield Wednesday.
“I thank Mr Chansiri that he gave me the chance to work in the Championship, to work for Sheffield Wednesday and the decision, I think, for me personally, if I had to make the decision again I will make the decision to come to England and work in the Championship.
“I didn’t come here to have only a job, I came here to maybe replicate what I did before in Germany, be very successful and go many times up to the first league and that was in my dream, that I try to go with Sheffield Wednesday in the future also to the Premier League. We must work on that and I know it is not far away from that.”
Luhukay walked into a difficult job at Sheffield Wednesday, but looked to have turned things around by the end of his first half-season in charge.
But after a decent start – which belied well-documented off-field problems at Hillsborough – a run of four defeats and a draw has left the 55-year-old under pressure from large sections of the Owls fanbase.
Wednesday host promotion-chasing Derby County on Saturday, boosted by the returns of key attackers Marco Matias and Fernando Forestieri for the first time in around two months.
