Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has explained for the first time why Owls striker Sam Winnall is undergoing his rehabilitation at loan club Derby County.

Winnall moved to Derby on a temporary basis last August and scored six goals in 17 Championship outings for the Rams, before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in early February.

As a result the 27-year-old is scheduled to miss the remainder of the current campaign and – in all likelihood – some of the next one too.

But even with his Derby deal due to expire in the meantime, Winnall has remained at Pride Park for treatment and hinted last month – not for the first time – that his intention is to move there permanently next term.

Sam Winnall back to work

Discussing the player’s circumstances after Wednesday’s 3-0 win against Reading on Saturday, Luhukay told BBC Radio Sheffield: “He had a very dangerous injury on his knee, he could take six or seven months to come back.”

On why Winnall has not yet returned to the Owls and whether he still has a future at Hillsborough, the Dutchman added: “He played there this season, he knows the medical team and we have no problem with that.

“At the end of the season we must make decisions – we’ll see what we decide.”

Winnall only moved to Wednesday from neighbours Barnsley 15 months ago, but could not tie down a regular starting place under Luhukay’s predecessor Carlos Carvalhal.

Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday or other? Where does Winnall’s future lie?
