Sheffield Wednesday received good news about the pair last week.

Returning striker Fernando Forestieri could play again for Sheffield Wednesday this season, according to his manager, Los Luhukay.

Forestieri, who was the Owls’ top scorer in each of his previous two campaigns at Hillsborough, has been missing since August with a knee injury.

The Argentina born player had been recovering in various places outside of the United Kingdom, but attended Wednesday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Forestieri has since met with Luhukay, who succeeded Carlos Carvalhal in January, and made a “very positive” impression on the Dutchman.

“Yeah very positive,” Luhukay told a press conference broadcast via the Owls’ official Facebook page on Monday. “He was very happy that he has come back with us.

“The next situation for Fernando is, he is now five months after his surgery, so we must now try to bring him every day, every week into a better physical [state], but also in the direction of team training.

“He must in the next weeks train individually and maybe when everything is progressing positively he can maybe start with the team training in a couple of weeks. But I can not give a date or exactly when he is maybe available to play for us.”

The Sheffield Wednesday boss, whose side have slipped to 17th in the Championship after suffering a spate of injuries, are also boosted by the return to contention of teenage striker George Hirst last week.

Hirst had been training in isolation before then and was not considered for selection at any age group amid a dispute over his contract, which expires this summer.

Luhukay, though, has urged Owls fans to remain patient as the 19-year-old, who scored and won a penalty for the Under-23s on Friday, builds up his fitness in the coming weeks.

“Yeah he [Hirst] is now an option for us,” the 54-year-old said. “You must look at the situation. He had seven, eight months not playing any games, only training, so it [requires] a lot of patience but we must give it time.”

When pressed for a timescale on when Hirst could appear for Wednesday’s first team, Luhukay added: “Give this time, give him patience and we will see what the future will bring us.”
