Jos Luhukay is confident Barry Bannan and Sheffield Wednesday will reach a positive solution when talks commence over a new contract for the Owls midfielder.
Bannan starred as Wednesday recorded their first league win of the season against Millwall on Wednesday, volleying in the opening goal and providing the free-kick from which Tom Lees scored the Owls’ winner.
But the 28-year-old’s Hillsborough future is currently uncertain after he entered the final year of his deal last month, prompting interest from Birmingham City and Middlesbrough, according to the Sheffield Star.
And after Lucas Joao’s decision to sign up on Wednesday, Luhukay was asked by BBC Radio Sheffield if Bannan could be next.
“Yes, for me, no discussion,” replied the Sheffield Wednesday manager. “Barry is a fantastic player and we think when he is positive for the club and the club is positive with him, when they speak with each other, I think, from both sides there will maybe come a solution.
“We must not speak about the quality of Barry. Everyone knows that he is a fantastic player for Sheffield Wednesday and for our team.
“But there is no pressure. Barry stays under contract until the end of the season so we know we have enough time and we know that Barry stays by Sheffield Wednesday very well and he feels good here. So we must not have pressure on him or that the club must have pressure. Both see the situation as positive and I think that is important.”
Bannan is one of 10 senior Owls players whose contracts expire in 2019, along with Keiren Westwood, Liam Palmer, Daniel Pudil, Kieran Lee, David Jones, Almen Abdi, George Boyd, Marco Matias and Gary Hooper.
