Jos Luhukay appears to have ruled out an imminent return to Sheffield Wednesday’s first team for Sam Winnall.

Posting cryptically on Twitter yesterday (Monday), Winnall announced that he was “edging closer” to something.

But speaking via Wednesday’s official Facebook page at a press conference earlier today, Luhukay revealed the striker has only just returned to full training six months since he suffered a cruciate ligament injury while on loan to Derby County.

“I don’t know what Sam means,” replied the Owls boss when asked about Winnall’s tweet. “Yesterday was the first time that he (did) a little bit training with us. But it takes time.”

With “no news” on Gary Hooper’s fitness and tomorrow’s fixture against Millwall “too early” for Lucas Joao, Sheffield Wednesday could do with having Winnall available for selection.

The 27-year-old scored six goals in 17 games for Derby last season and previously expressed a desire to remain at Pride Park beyond the end of his loan spell.

But his lack of match practice looks to have deterred potential suitors during the summer transfer window, and could help to revive his fortunes at Hillsborough.

Can Winnall be an important player for Sheffield Wednesday this season?
