Francesco Bagnaia could soon be out of a job at Ducati, with reports suggesting Pedro Acosta has already agreed to join the reigning world champions for 2027.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, it seems increasingly likely that Bagnaia will have to move on, despite his two world titles with the team.
Lorenzo said: “Ducati is not a company like the other manufacturers. And if they have made this decision, it is because they think that Acosta is even stronger than Bagnaia. So let’s wait and see what happens.”
Bagnaia narrowly missed out on a third consecutive title in 2024 by just 10 points. But last season saw him fall well short of Marc Marquez, who finished more than 250 points ahead despite missing the final rounds through injury.
Jorge Lorenzo on Francesco Bagnaia’s options

Bagnaia has been linked with Yamaha, but they seem to be focused on Jorge Martin. And with Toprak Razgatlioglu potentially stepping into a factory role in 2027, that route might already be off the table.
However, if Martin were to leave Aprilia, it could create an opening alongside Marco Bezzecchi, who recently agreed to a contract extension.
Lorenzo said: “In a year and a half, Bagnaia’s situation has changed completely. From being the undisputed number one in Ducati, now it seems there’s no room for him.
“That’s how it works: you’re worth what you show in the last race, and his last season wasn’t up to par. He’s a rider with very precise and clean riding, so I’d see him doing well in Yamaha.
“Then I’d see him doing well in Aprilia: with Bezzecchi he’d make an all-Italian team and media-wise that would be excellent.”
Why Bagnaia unlikely to rejoin VR46 despite academy links
Bagnaia could go back to VR46 if needed, but he’s not likely to choose that route. If the team remains a Ducati satellite in 2027, moving there might be seen as a step down.
Bagnaia is still focused on joining a factory team, and his track record should attract strong offers. Only Marc Marquez has more accolades among active riders.
Aprilia have emerged as Ducati’s biggest challenger going into the new season.
Their growth under Massimo Rivola has been impressive, and he’ll know better than anyone that bringing in Bagnaia could be the final piece they need.
Lorenzo added: “I think Bagnaia will receive several interesting offers. He’ll have no problem finding a good seat for 2027.”
