Jorge Cadete holds a record that Celtic striker Moussa Dembele will be looking to break this season.

Jorge Cadete has told The Scottish Sun that he expects Moussa Dembele to eclipse the record he still holds for most goals in a player’s first full season at Celtic, and suggested that the Frenchman should target 45 goals for the campaign.

Cadete – who played for the Hoops between 1996 and 1997 – scored 33 times during his first full season at Parkhead, but it appears that that tally is going to be left behind by the youngster, who has been sensational lately.

Dembele has scored 32 times already, including a staggering 12 in his last six, so will surely surpass Cadete’s total if he remains fit for the majority of the remaining weeks of the campaign.

And the retired Portugal international has not only backed the current Bhoys star to rewrite history, but has also suggested that he should be looking to close in on a half-century before the curtain comes down on the campaign.

“There is no doubt he will break my record of 33 goals,” he told The Scottish Sun.

“How many can he get? It’s difficult to predict, but with 12 or 13 games remaining, he should be aiming for 45 goals.

“That is realistic because Dembele is a player with massive talent who is full of confidence.”

Given Dembele’s current form, it would hardly be a surprise if he not only reaches the target that Cadete has set but actually goes past 50 goals for the season.

But with the title already virtually in the bag – Celtic lead the Scottish Premiership by 27 points – Brendan Rodgers would surely be forgiven for partially wanting Dembele to stop finding the net with such regularity.

It already seems inevitable that they will have to field offers for the 20-year-old this summer, but a continuation of his current strike-rate would surely make it even harder for the Hoops to keep hold of him as he will have strengthened his position as one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters.
