Jorge Cadete has been quoted as saying by The Daily Record that Celtic rejected a £9 million offer from Leeds United for him back in 1996.

The former Portugal international striker spent just a season at Celtic, scoring 33 goals in 44 appearances in the process, according to The Daily Record.

The 49-year-old arrived at Celtic from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in February 1996, but his registration at the Glasgow giants was finalised only in April of that year.

Cadete has revealed that Leeds, who were then in the Premier League, wanted to sign him from Celtic.

“It was at a time when Leeds United came to see Pierre van Hooijdonk, but after seeing two games they wanted to negotiate my exit,” The Daily Record quotes Cadete as saying. “They went so far as to offer Celtic £9million in 1996, and [Celtic] did not want to sell.”

Present day

Leeds enjoyed some great success during the 1990s and early noughties, as they regularly competed in the Premier League and also featured in the Champions League.

The West Yorkshire outfit, though, have not featured in the top flight of English football since 2004 and are now in the Championship.

Celtic, though, still remain one of the biggest and most successful clubs in the world and are dominating Scottish football at the moment.

The Glasgow giants may not be making much impact in Europe, but the Hoops are playing in the group stage of the Champions League for the second season in a row.
