Glasgow Rangers midfielder Jordan Rossiter has enjoyed an excellent loan spell away from Ibrox.

Jordan Rossiter’s loan move during the January transfer window appeared to potentially represent the midfielder’s final chance to set himself up for a successful career at Rangers.

The 21-year-old’s talent has never been in doubt. But he has found it impossible to maintain his fitness and left for Bury having started just six Scottish Premiership games for the Gers since his arrival in 2016.

Heading to Gigg Lane set Rossiter a tricky challenge. The gulf between the two clubs was always going to make it difficult for the former Liverpool midfielder to remind the Gers why it seemed such a coup to sign him almost three years ago.

But Rossiter’s spell looks as though it could be extremely significant, especially when you consider what has gone on at Ibrox in recent weeks.

The youngster has started Bury’s last seven games in all competitions, and played 90 minutes in all but one of those fixtures – he was taken off after 82 minutes against Exeter.

Remarkably, he has already notched up the same number of league starts for Bury as he has for Rangers. Given his quality, he surely has to be giving himself a genuine chance of turning his Ibrox career right around upon his return.

Gerrard is likely to make changes this summer, perhaps in the middle of the park. It would be a surprise if Lassana Coulibaly’s stay lasted beyond this season, while the manager confirmed to Rangers’ official Twitter account last month that Graham Dorrans has suffered a setback in his recovery from an injury.

He, unfortunately, has shared the injury-prone tag with Rossiter for much of his spell with the Light Blues.

But perhaps Rossiter may be ready to prove that he can shake off that tag in the coming months. And if he does, Rangers may well finally see what a special player they have had on their hands for the last few years.
