Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford once came as an away fan to Goodison Park.
Pickford grew up as a Sunderland supporter, and he was in the away end 10 years ago.
And Pickford says that visit helped to convince him that £25 million move (BBC Sport) to Everton would be a wise one.
“As soon as I was told there was interest from Everton I knew I wanted to do it, I said yes straight away,” he said.
“Funnily enough Goodison Park was one of the few away grounds I visited as a fan. I can remember the date, 28 December 2008, and I can remember Mikel Arteta scoring a worldy as we went down 3-0. We got battered, actually. The only thing I remember about the stadium was that we didn’t get a very good view, but I enjoyed the atmosphere.
“It was quite hostile, the stadium felt a bit historic, and although I was too young to ever go I imagined Roker Park must have been quite similar back in the day.”
Pickford has been in excellent form since arriving at Everton, with his performances earning him a great deal of credit.
Pickford has become England’s number one goalkeeper, and built a reputation as one of the finest stoppers in the Premier League.
Pickford has only recently signed a new long-term contract at Everton, which should see him stay on Merseyside for the years ahead.
England have a friendly against the USA in midweek, where Pickford is expected to start.
Everton then return to action with a match against Crystal Palace in two weekends’ time.
