Everton’s Seamus Coleman has leadership in spades, says Jordan Pickford.
Jordan Pickford has told The Echo that Everton team-mate Seamus Coleman is the most likely man to give the others players a ‘rollicking’ when needs be.
Everton host Manchester City at Goodison Park tonight as Marco Silva’s side look to transform their fortunes.
It has been a difficult last few months for the Toffees, who have lost three of their last four games in all competitions – including a 3-2 FA Cup defeat at Millwall – as the pressure mounts on Silva.
In times like these, leadership is a key quality within the dressing room, and goalkeeper Pickford, a £30 million signing in the summer of 2017 [BBC Sport], reveals that the Irish defender has these characteristics.
When asked which Everton player can dish out a ‘rollicking’, Pickford said: “Seamus. He is a very good leader, knows the club inside out and has the passion as well. There are a few others, too, but you have to give it to him.”
Coleman, captain of the Republic of Ireland, should probably give himself a bit of a pasting in light of his performances this season.
The 30-year-old right-back has been well below his best overall under Silva and it seems like the leg break he suffered on international duty almost two years ago has had a lasting effect on him, as it would.
But form is temporary and class is permanent, and if Coleman can lead the Toffees to a big win over City tonight then it could go some way toward repairing his perception among the Goodison faithful.
