Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been one of few positives on Wearside this season.
Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has told the Telegraph that the Black Cats’ poor run of form hurts him even more because he is from the area.
The young stopper has arguably been Sunderland’s best player this season, coming into the side when Vito Mannone was ruled out with injury, and his good form managed to get him a call-up to the England senior squad, but it has not been enough to help David Moyes get his first Premier League win as manager.
The 22-year-old is a product of the club’s academy, and has explained why the defeats hurt him just as much as the supporters who turn up to the Stadium of Light.

“I’m a massive Sunderland fan so it probably hurts me as much as anyone,” Pickford told The Telegraph.
“There is nothing more I want than Sunderland to win games. I hate losing, anyone who knows me will tell you that, I hate it, I hate letting goals in, so it has been hard because we keep losing and I keep conceding goals.”

Born in Washington, the local lad is the Sunderland fan closest to the action, but that means the horrific start to the season is even more upsetting and frustrating for Pickford, who has to deal with professional and emotional frustration as his team sit bottom of the Premier League with just two points.
The pain Pickford is feeling is the same pain that the Sunderland supporters are feeling, and it will come as no consolation to the youngster that he has been performing well since taking over as the Black Cats’ number one goalkeeper.
