Jordan Lyden’s loan from Aston Villa to Blackburn Rovers suffers potentially fatal blow

Aston Villa were expected to loan Jordan Lyden out in January with Blackburn Rovers among the League One clubs interested.

Jordan Lyden has been in sensational form for Aston Villa’s Under-23s this season and it appeared that a loan move to a club lower down the Football League ladder was the logical next step in the New Year.

The Birmingham Mail reported late last month that Lyden, who has scored four goals in ten games for Kevin MacDonald’s youth side this season, was on the radar of a number of League One and Two clubs with a loan move potentially on the cards in January.

Blackburn Rovers have reportedly watched Lyden in action this season and the young Australian admitted that regular first-team football would be good for his development.

But the prospects of the 21-year-old, who has made four first-team appearances for Villa, making a move to Ewood Park now look to be all but over.

Because the Birmingham Mail report that Lyden suffered an injury in the closing stages of Villa’s 2-1 Under-23 win at Norwich City – potentially scuppering any hopes of a loan deal in two months’ time.

Lyden has suffered with a whole host of problems in recent years but this, if it keeps him out for the long-term, will be a particularly bitter blow. After all, Lyden, who posted a photo of his foot in a protective boot on social media, appears to have outgrown the academy set-up with the time right to make a step forward into the next level.

But if Lyden is likely to stay on the sidelines for more than a few weeks, it appears unlikely that Blackburn, or any other side, will hand him a chance.
